Chairman’s Desk
By Beverly LaHaye
March/April 2001 Family Voice

The National Institutes of Health recently released a study confirming what we have said for a long time: Abstinence pledges work. The federally financed study of more than 90,000 7th to 12th graders was “designed to measure the effects of family, peer group, school, neighborhood, religious institution and community on behaviors that promote good health.” It found that 65 percent of teens who made a pledge of abstinence kept it!

This illustrates that Biblical principles work. Critics of the study claimed abstinence pledges set teens up “for disappointment, guilt and loss of self-esteem if they break the promise.” But the researchers found no evidence of those problems.

Moral relativists would like us all to believe Biblical principles are harmful and too restrictive. Look at most television program schedules, movie reviews or magazine covers, and you will see what is truly harmful. Our nation’s children are bombarded with messages promoting sexual promiscuity, unethical behavior, and godless worldviews—not only from the media, but also from our schools and government. Parents who want a safe haven for their children face landmines at every turn.

Preserving Our Future
So Concerned Women for America is responding with a new campaign called Save Our Children. Since we began in 1979, CWA has fought vigorously on our children’s behalf. Now we are aiming at the most grievous attacks against them.

We want to save our children from ...

  • destruction and death by upholding the sanctity of life;
  • manipulation and failing education in our nation’s schools;
  • “tolerance” and perversion promoted through the homosexual agenda;
  • exploitation and filth in the pornography industry;
  • atheism and bigotry that threaten our religious freedom; and
  • United Nations’ principles of globalism, sexual license and population control.

Throughout our history, CWA has built an impressive record of legislative, judicial and social victories. Many of you have stood beside us since our beginning, and many more have joined us along the way. Through your prayers and action, we have seen successes.

But as we begin this new millennium, I believe CWA must use even stronger measures to combat the overwhelming attacks upon our children.

Four-Part Strategy
To Save Our Children, CWA has a four-part plan. The first is our media strategy. We plan to place ads concerning our campaign in national newspapers and publications. The first was a full-page letter to President Bush in The Washington Times’ inaugural edition. It welcomed him to Washington and requested his support of the campaign’s objectives. In addition, we will discuss the threats to our children on my daily radio show, “Beverly LaHaye Today.”

Part two of our strategy involves you, our grassroots. We hope to get a copy of my new book, Who Will Save Our Children?, into as many hands as possible. We want to give you the information and tools you need to spread our message across this nation.

Part three involves legislation. We are already meeting with key members of Congress and their staffers to create, introduce and pass legislation that will protect our children. We hope to protect unborn children from the inhumane partial-birth abortion procedure; through the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which would give “the legal right of personhood to babies who are born, including those who survive botched abortions”; protect parental rights in public schools; and eliminate the marriage tax penalty.

These three elements are crucial to our campaign’s success. But part four, education, is perhaps the most important. We hope to increase our membership by 250,000 pro-family women and men. Millions of conservative, pro-family individuals across the country feel as though their voice and beliefs have been lost in our culture. I hear from them frequently as I travel; they are delighted to learn of CWA, an organization that speaks out for them and involves them.

A Bigger Difference
Together, we will be able to fulfill CWA’s mission: “to protect and promote Biblical values among all citizens ... thereby reversing the decline in moral values in our nation.” I am excited about this new campaign. Together, we will save our children!
