Did Eric Stumble?
By Catherina Hurlburt
March/April 2001 Family Voice

I met Eric Harrah in 1998 at CWA's 15th National Convention. Eric's conversion testimony mesmerized the audience. God had brought him out of homosexuality and the abortion industry. Christians thrust him into the limelight—too much, too soon.

In September 2000, WORLD reported Eric had “renounced Christianity” and “returned to a flamboyant homosexual lifestyle.” A month later, Focus on the Family's Citizen published an update. Eric was actually seeking a church, it said.

His friend Steve Stupar, who led him to faith in Christ, told me Eric now attends church regularly. So, I had to ask him: “How are you doing spiritually?”

During Eric's two years in public speaking, he rarely made it to church. “I never got discipled,” he told me. After the WORLD article, Eric was at his lowest point with no place to go but up. Thankfully, he did. “I thought, 'I want to get back to God again.'” Eric found a congregation in Dover, Delaware.

“He's turned to the Lord,” confirmed Eric's pastor, Jeff Carter. “My wife and I couldn't have asked for a better member. He's become part of our family here.”

But did he return to homosexuality? “Since November 1, 1997 [day of his salvation], I have not engaged in any homosexual activity,” said Eric. His friend Steve confirmed this, and Pastor Carter agreed: “He's living a Godly lifestyle. I wouldn't see any validity at all [to the accusation].”

Eric has struggled with his faith. But “male fellowship that was pure and of the body of Christ” kept him from returning to homosexuality.

“[Ex-gays] need love to help them make it through,” said Pastor Carter. “The Christian community has become so full of the Word; now it's time to start doing what God has called us to do—and reach out.”
