The Muhlenberg Award
By Tanya L. Green, J.D.
November/December 2001 Family Voice

Pastor Muhlenberg’s courageous stand is remembered. Concerned Women for America of Virginia each year presents the John Peter Muhlenberg Award to a Virginia pastor who “most closely exemplifies the characteristics the Major General displayed during the American Revolution.”

Since its inception in 1996, the award has aimed to encourage pastors to “take a public stand” on moral, community and public policy issues. CWA of Virginia presents the award at its annual Pastor’s Policy Briefing in the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond and a second time before his congregation.

“The most difficult thing is to choose a pastor,” said State Director Patricia Phillips.

The 2001 Muhlenberg Award went to Pastor Steve King of Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington. King’s ministry, Christian Citizenship Ministry Team, sponsors voter registration drives and distributes voter guides within the church. More than 90 percent of his eligible church members are registered voters! He established financial support for Ex-gay Transformation Ministries and endorses his church’s financial support of a local crisis pregnancy center. In addition, Pastor King founded the Arlington Pastors Fellowship, an association of pastors who meet weekly for prayer.
