Hawaii’s Sex Education Curriculum – “Pono” or “Porno”?

Hawaii’s Sex Education Curriculum – “Pono” or “Porno”?

CWA of Hawaii does not support the “Pono Choices” program that is currently being taught in some Hawaiian schools, and we stand with the parents who also object to this program. Hawaii State Representative Bob McDermott (R-District 40) has been working very diligently to try and get this program stopped before it goes any further. Rep. McDermott says, “It is unhealthy at best and lethal at worst.” Read more about his concerns.

Today at 1:30 p.m. the Hawaii Board of Education (B.O.E.) will be meeting, and on the Agenda is “Pono Choices” about which we have all been hearing. The B.O.E. will be hearing testimony related to this issue.

“Pono Choices” is turning out to be more like “Porno” Choices than “Pono”, because of the explicit sexual details that are being taught, and they are not what the children need to be learning in school. Right now there is an option available to parents who do not wish to have their children learn these things that will be taught in “Pono Choices”, under B.O.E. Policy No. 2210, which states in part:

Parents or legal guardians may … on their own volition, write a letter to the school administrators or a teacher to have their child excluded from a specific lesson or activity. If such a letter is received, the student must be provided with an alternative learning activity.

Most importantly, however, Rep. McDermott encourages all parents to do what many parents are already doing. They are actions that no governor, no B.O.E. member, no teacher, and no legislator can do: Talk to, love, embrace, and “be there” for your kids.

There is talk by B.O.E. of removing the option once this program is firmly established. It is already being taught in schools here in Hawaii to 11- and 12-year-old students; this is not something they are planning to do; they are already doing it. If you live on Oahu, please make every effort to attend the B.O.E. meeting in person today, the more people opposing this, the more of an opportunity we will have to stop this program in its tracks. They meet on Oahu at the Queen Liliuokalani Building, 1390 Miller Street, room 404.

Time is of the essence and something needs to be done right now before this program goes any further. The B.O.E. needs to be hearing from as many parents and concerned citizens as possible.

Contact your member of the B.O.E. Express your concern to them about this program. It’s easy, click here.

Pray that the members of the Board of Education will make the right decision for the children in Hawaii schools. Pray that God will guard the hearts and minds of those children who are exposed to this program.
