On November 29, America lost one of its most enduring pro-life champions, former Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Illinois).
During his 32-year career in the House, Hyde was one of the most vocal and unrelenting advocates of the sanctity of life. Hyde successfully proposed an amendment to ban the use of federal funds to pay for abortions in 1977, an amendment that continues to protect innocent life even today. But that was just a start. He also fought for the ban on partial-birth abortion and much more. Hyde will long be remembered as leading the first steps in a long journey in favor of the right to life. His strength and potent influence on the pro-life movement will be missed.
