CWA President Urges Prayer for U.N. Convention on People With Disabilities     8/4/2006 By Kylan Lamont Pro-life voices excluded from meetings. Concerned Women for America’s President Wendy Wright is calling for a prayer alert concerning the United Nations’ (U.N.’s) negotiations and drafting of the Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities, scheduled for August 14 – 25 in New York City. While pro-life voices have been excluded from the convention, the U.N. will discuss a treaty that could potentially be used to establish an international right to abortion. The treaty guarantees the right to life of all people with disabilities in Article 8, where it says, “States Parties reaffirm the inherent right to life of all persons with disabilities, and shall take all necessary measures to ensure its effective enjoyment by them.” However, China is trying to limit this right to those “born and currently living on this earth,” allowing for legal abortion of disabled babies. Other problems arise in the section calling for “sexual and reproductive health services,” which include abortion, for disabled citizens. Nor does the treaty guarantee the disabled a right to food and water. Under the Bush administration, the United States has no intention of becoming part of this treaty. But U.S. judges have made decisions based on international law in which the U.S. had no part. Your prayers are needed! Pray for those fighting for life and the rights of the disabled. Pray that the treaty will give these rights to all people with disabilities. Pray that abortion advocates would not gain ground through the treaty’s ambiguous language.
