Press Conference: CWA Urges Congress to Rein in Cable Monopolies 7/19/2005
This follows after CWA and 24 other national and state-based organizations released a letter addressed to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, explaining the need for such action.
WHEN: Wednesday, July 20 at 1:00 pm ET
CALL: To join the conference call, please dial 1-800-861-4084 and use this participant code: 9984238 #.
WHO: Lanier Swann, Director of Government Relations for CWA, Phil Burress, President of Citizens for Community Values, Dan Isett, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs for Parents Television Council, and Robert Peters, President of Morality in Media, will participate in the teleconference.
“The hundreds of thousands of Americans who are represented by the 25 organizations that signed the letter are tired of allowing cable operators to get away with functioning as a monopoly in the communities they serve, and forcing consumers to subsidize programming that is obscene, violent and immoral,” said Lanier Swann, CWA’s Director of Government Relations. “As consumers, we should only have to pay for the channels that we want in our home, not the filth that they force us to buy in their current bundles. That’s why we are going straight to our elected representatives to ask for their help to restore the parental right to monitor what comes into our family rooms.”
