CWA and 24 other national and state-based groups have joined in a letter to Congress urging them to enact channel choice or “a la carte” legislation. This effort comes as Congress is about to rewrite telecom laws to accommodate the industry’s new technology and advocates for a free market say now is the time to act. Video-on-demand technology is already providing viewer flexibility, yet the industry refuses to allow customers to choose and pay for their regular viewing selections independently. “Customers are tired of allowing cable operators to get away with functioning as a monopoly in the communities they serve, and forcing consumers to subsidize programming that is obscene, violent and immoral,” says CWA director of government relations Lanier Swann.
