Ashcroft- Oregon Assisted Suicide Defeat
A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Attorney General John Ashcroft can not override Oregonís physician-assisted suicide law by enforcing federal drug laws. Ashcroft had issued a memo to federal drug enforcement agents reversing an earlier memo issued by then-Attorney General Janet Reno. The Reno memo instructed agents to not enforce the law against Oregon physicians who use prescribe lethal doses of federally controlled narcotics. Where does this leave the issue of physician assisted suicide? CWA Policy Analyst Martha Kleder brings us this report with Senior Policy Analyst Wendy Wright.
