Senate Briefing on Women’s Human Rights and Asylum Policy: Protecting Women Refugees

Rodi Alvarado Peña is a Guatemalan woman who for a decade was brutally beaten by her husband while the Guatemalan police and courts ignored her repeated attempts to get help. When she ran away, her husband found her and beat her until she was unconscious. Desperate, she fled to the United States in search of safety. Now, with her case on the desk of the Attorney General and proposed policy-setting regulations soon to be released, her case has become the vehicle by which the U.S. will set forth its position in this area of law.
CWA’s Wendy Wright spoke at the briefing in support of protecting women who have been the victims of this kind of abuse, along with Karen Musalo and Bo Cooper.
