PRESS RELEASE

United Nations Attacks Religious Freedom as President Laments Loss of Religious Freedom at National Prayer Breakfast

Nance: “When religious groups are forced to deny their deeply held religious convictions, it is not called ‘balance’; it is called ‘tyranny.’”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United Nations launched an attack on the tenets of the Catholic Church last week after heavily criticizing Vatican attitudes towards contraception, homosexuality, and abortion in a report to address child abuse within the church. The U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) said the Vatican should “immediately remove” all clergy who are known or suspected child abusers, a report welcomed by victims, yet within the report, they heavily criticized principles of the Catholic church on the sanctity of life and homosexuality.

Penny Young Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America, and Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Beverly LaHaye Institute Executive Director and Senior Fellow, respond in the statement below condemning the United Nations for attacking religious freedom:

CEO and President, Penny Young Nance:
“The sex abuse scandal of the Catholic Church is very real, very serious, and needs to be dealt with vigilantly by the Church or any other institution where this kind of evil is discovered. However, the fact that the United Nations felt free to weigh in on church doctrine regarding life and marriage is outrageous. The United Nations pointing to the Catholic Church’s abuse when they have their own widespread and longstanding accounts of U.N. peacekeepers’ engaging in forced prostitution, widespread rape, and sexual exploitation and abuse of minors is arrogant and hypocritical. The Church must deal with its issues, and the U.N. needs to attend to its own, also. In addition, the U.N. has no right lecturing on theology and would not apply this same kind of overreach to any faith other than Christianity. If I am wrong, then I look forward to the same helpful hints to Muslims.”

Beverly LaHaye Institute Executive Director and Senior Fellow, Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse:
“At the same time that President Obama was lamenting the losses of religious freedom in his comments at the National Prayer Breakfast, the United Nations was launching an unprecedented attack on the Catholic Church, in essence demanding that they approve homosexuality, contraception, and teen sex.

“Attacks on the Holy See delegation at the United Nations are nothing new, but the current assault on some of the basic principles of Catholic teaching is a new low in undermining religious freedom, not just for Catholics, but for all who hold to historic, time-proven Christian beliefs and practices. The arrogance of the U.N. seems to know no bounds.

“The aggressiveness of these efforts indicates a sense of desperation on the Left as they recognize the impending lame-duck status of the Obama Administration. As the Left’s influence wanes, they see a threat to their goals of reversing international policies that rest on the solid moral foundation of Judeo-Christian and Biblical teachings.”
