As we pause to remember the events of September 11, 2001, and the lives lost, it is comforting to hear the stories of faith and triumph that put those events into God's larger plan. Here we bring you a couple of stories of hope, perseverance and victory that have unfolded since the day of the attack.

Beauty Beyond the Ashes

  • Cheryl McGuinness suffered unbearable loss on September 11, 2001. Her high school sweetheart and husband Tom was the co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11 – the first plane to strike the twin towers. Suddenly, she was without the strong, gentle and faithful man who led her family and her two teenage children had lost their father. Today, Cheryl is reaching out in ministry to women everywhere who have suffered crippling losses through her ministry www.beautybeyondtheashes.com. She also has published a book by the same name, through Howard Publishing Co. Cheryl dropped by our studios and spoke with Martha Kleder.

It's OK to Cry

  • John Yates was at work at the Pentagon on the morning of 9-11. As he gathered with his co-workers around the television watching the events in New York, his life changed forever. John was an ordinary man, who became a hero that day by leading survivors to safety. His hero status continued as he underwent years of physical therapy, and encouraged others by his example to live life one day and one step at a time. The phrase "It's OK to Cry" is the title of John's story, now published as a children's book on dealing with overwhelming tragedy. Martha Kleder spoke with John, and Meg Bragg, a friend of the family and author of "It's OK to Cry."

We were able to connect with John Yates, right where he was on the morning of September 11, 2001; at work in the Pentagon.... Click here to listen.
  • Meg Bragg is a former school teacher and a friend of the Yates family. Inspired by the card from the school girl, she took John's story and turned it into a book for children on how they can deal with tragedy. Click here to listen.

"It's OK to Cry" by Meg Bragg is published by Xlibris, a subsidiary of Random House. Proceeds from sale of the book go to a fund for the Yates family.

Through the Fire into Ministry

  • Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, USA (Ret.) was at work in the Pentagon on the day terrorists attacked sending a ball of fire through his duty area. Of the burns that covered over 60 percent of his body, nearly half were third-degree burns. Three years, over 30 operations, and multiple skin grafts later, Brian and his wife Melva have moved on. Now retired from the Army, the Birdwells have started a new ministry to other burn victims called Face the Fire. Martha Kleder spoke with Brian and Mel on this phoenix ministry. Click here to listen.
