Crouse Says 2006 TIP Report is Disappointing     6/5/2006
CWA Calls for Stronger Enforcement of End Demand Act

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) expressed its disappointment with the just-released 2006 Trafficking in Persons Report. Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, CWA’s point person on the trafficking issue, said, “This year’s TIP report repudiates the new End Demand Act by giving Tier One status to two countries that legalized prostitution and keeping four countries on Tier Two Watch status instead of acting decisively when they have failed to make progress over several years.”

Crouse continued, “It is unconscionable to give Germany Tier One status when it is blatantly encouraging sex trafficking during the upcoming World Cup games. Demand reduction is the bottom line for ending trafficking. The U.S. –– from the President on down –– has made it clear to all nations that ending demand is essential; everyone has been put on notice, yet Germany persists in setting up sex shacks and mega brothels for the World Cup games in spite of warnings that such moves will encourage trafficking.”

Crouse concluded, “The TIP Report will become an international joke if it continues to ignore those nations that promote sex slavery and lets other nations remain year after year on the ‘special watch’ list even though they are making no measurable progress in combating trafficking in their country. CWA calls on the State Department to put teeth into its expectations for demand reduction around the world. Weak links in the worldwide effort to combat sex slavery keeps the industry alive and endangers victims in all nations.”

The State Department released the 2006 Trafficking in Persons report on June 5. Congress will hold hearings on June 15, when trafficking victims will describe their experiences.
