CWA’s Crouse Sees Good and Bad News in New Public Education Policy 10/25/2006 Washington, D.C. –– Some people are calling an announcement today from the United States Department of Education the most significant policy change in public education since Title IX, which went into effect in 1972 to ban sex discrimination in schools that receive federal funding. The new federal rules –– which will go into effect November 24 –– will allow single-sex public education with two stipulations: (1) enrollment must be voluntary, and (2) options of “substantially equal” quality must be available for those ineligible for the new single-sex schools or classes.
Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute and former teacher, professor and college administrator, praised the policy change and issued a caution. “The good news is that after years of being under the thumb of feminists, decisions regarding public education for the nation’s children will now be under local control. The bad news is that we will now have another whole layer of federal rules and regulations choking public school systems.
“Though single-sex schools are more prevalent now than at any time over the past decade, they are still a minute number of the nearly 100,000 public schools in America. The new rules will allow school districts to determine whether single-sex public schools are in the district’s best interests. Certainly, in some urban areas and in other situations, educators have found that single-sex education works best,” said Crouse.
“Past efforts to bring equality for girls in public education have too often been at the expense of the nation’s boys. It remains to be seen whether this new policy will even things out so that all of our children will receive a quality education.”
