CWA's State Leaders React to Election Results     11/9/2006
By Staff

The view from the front lines.

Concerned Women for America gathered these insights on the election results from our state leaders.

  • We in Arizona do not feel that the defeat of the Protect Marriage Amendment is a victory for the homosexual agenda. Our state law recognizes marriage as only between one man and one woman. Nevertheless, we will continue to educate our fellow citizens on the fact that judicial actions, such as in Massachusetts and New Jersey, can happen here in Arizona if the sanctity of marriage is not protected in our state constitution. ~ Sally Mikesell, CWA of Arizona State Director
  • All I can say is that if this election is any indication of the moral state of this nation, then the church has a whole lot of work to do! I'm so glad I know that partisan politics is not the solution to our nation's problems. As always, prayer is the essential element to restore this nation to its roots. ~ Maureen Richardson, CWA of Washington State Director
  • The abortion ban lost 55 percent to 44 percent. I believe that the practice of abortion has been entrenched in our culture for 33 years. A whole generation has grown up under this culture of death with the assumption that if it is legal it must be right. It's difficult to change that mindset. Looking on the positive side, we raised awareness. We educated citizens to the fact that abortion kills a unique human being, and it hurts women and families. Women who have kept the secret of their abortion for years have felt comfortable to come forward to tell their story of regret. This has initiated the healing process of their emotional pain.

The marriage amendment passed with a 52 percent to 48 percent vote. That margin is very embarrassing. The other side confused the voters regarding the language of the amendment. They falsely claimed that it would deny benefits and protections, such as domestic violence protections and legal protections to non-marital persons, homosexual and heterosexual. They touted the discrimination line, too. However, in the end, we still won, and for that we are grateful. ~ Linda Schauer, CWA of South Dakota State Director
  • In Illinois, in an otherwise "family-challenged" state, we are pleased that pro-life/pro-family candidate Peter Roskam will represent retiring Henry Hyde's district, despite a well-financed challenge by anti-Bush Iraqi war veteran candidate Tammy Duckworth. Nationally, the success of marriage amendments, at first glance, seems inconsistent with the other successes of a political party which wishes to redefine marriage. However, successful Democratic candidates generally appear to be cut of more conservative cloth than we've seen in the past. Could the Democratic Party be waking up just a little? ~ Karen Hayes, CWA of Illinois State Director
  • Republicans suffered many casualties in 2006 election, but the wounds were self-inflicted. They abandoned the moral issues that brought them victory in 2002 and 2004. Yet, these issues continue to win at the polls. Voters passed bans on "same-sex marriage," and voted against legalizing marijuana. Voters proved they are not beholden to any party, but values will be upheld! ~ Tamara Scott, CWA of Iowa State Director
  • CWA of Missouri is lamenting the passage of Amendment 2, the Constitutional Amendment protecting the right to human cloning. Many CWA members across the state participated in the campaign to expose the deceit of the proposed amendment. They spread the word through their churches, their neighborhoods, and their circles of influence. We fought a good fight. The results are not want we had hoped for, but we will stay the course. ~ Beverly Ehlen, CWA of Missouri - Northeast Area Director
  • Tuesday was a wake-up call. We must rebuild and regroup as we look ahead to the legislative session, educating the electorate and encouraging our grassroots to stay in the important battle for our children. We stand on solid ground. If we unwaveringly hold to our principles, we will ultimately prevail. ~ Cathy Gibson, CWA of California - Southern Counties Area Director
  • As conservative women, we must take our stand now more than ever to protect the next generation. Protection for the next generation must be a priority. ~ Jane Carron, CWA of Florida State Director
  • Louisiana's voters cried out in the voting booth on Nov. 6th for integrity and ethical conduct in public service. The challenge to those elected is now clear and under extreme scrutiny in our "New Louisiana." ~ Deborah Young, CWA of Louisiana State Director
  • The media in Kansas played a HUGE role in being the gatekeeper of information; therefore, the people did not get the whole truth and were unable to make an informed decision. God says that people perish for lack of knowledge ... the end result of managed news will hurt our children. After much prayer and reflection, I am more convinced than ever that hearts need to be changed; not votes. Nothing has changed about the truth; truth is still the goal, but people need to know what the truth is. That will take a changed heart and all the information. ~ Judy Smith, CWA of Kansas State Director
  • I am deeply saddened by the results in Ohio. I do not think Ohioans truly appreciated the impact Ohio had on the big picture in our country. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing: But to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (I Corinthians 1:18,19) "Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid." (Isaiah 29:14) We that believe know the end of the story, and it is a great one. We must not stop fighting for God's righteousness because in the end it's souls, not seats! ~ Bobbi Radeck, CWA of Ohio State Director
  • One morning we will wake to a perfect judge who will rule the Earth with faultless justice. Our hope is not in any political party, candidate or referendum. Our hope is in this and this alone: "Jesus answered, 'My kingdom is not of this world.'" (John 18:36) Until then, CWA members everywhere will continue to obey Christ's command to "occupy until I come" (Luke 19:13) and put on the full armor of God, knowing that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world." Jesus is calling us to "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might…and having done all, stand…Praying always." (Ephesians 6) ~ Charla Bansley, CWA of Maine State Director
  • I think Americans repudiated Republicans rather than conservatives yesterday, as several "blue dog Democrats" were elected. Enough people were upset with President Bush's failure to protect our own borders as well as he is protecting the one between Iraq and Syria, and thus were motivated to vote for a "change" which will not necessarily result in the improvement desired. Here in California, we rejoice that "Jessica's Law," Proposition 83, which increases the penalties for sexual predators, easily passed. Proposition 85, Parental Notification, is still in limbo, but it seems headed for defeat with 94 percent of precincts reporting. Polls on this Proposition looked very favorable until the misleading television ads were broadcast during the last two weeks before Election Day. This is a prime example of a "media win." ~ Phyllis Nemeth, CWA of California - Los Angeles Tri Counties, Area Director
  • Along with the re-election of our Governor and Lt. Governor, Texans have again returned a conservative pro-family majority to the Texas legislature. We look forward to working with them to define the parameters of stem cell research in Texas. Our citizens have returned Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to the U.S. Senate. She and our junior senator, John Cornyn, have faithfully supported our military and strong national defense issues. They have also stood firmly and actively for the judicial confirmation of strict constitutionalists. A majority of the thirty-two U.S. House of Representative seats from Texas remain in the hands of our conservative leaders. They will stand as a sentinel against the liberal onslaught of the pro-abortion, pro-homosexual agenda in Congress. ~ Ann Hettinger, CWA of Texas State Director
