Why America Must Win in Iraq     8/15/2007

1. Iraq is one battle in a global war against terrorists. To leave Iraq would allow terrorists to occupy and run a base of operations from Iraq. Everyone agrees there would be a slaughter of innocent Iraqis, especially religious minorities.

2. The U.S. military and Iraqi forces are fighting al-Qaeda in Iraq. Iraqis and military experts agree that this is not a civil war; the violence is caused by terrorists.

3. Surrendering by leaving Iraq prematurely will not satisfy our enemies. It will legitimize their tactics and embolden them.

4. If we leave Iraq too soon, it will become the perfect training ground for attacks by al-Qaeda against us and every country in the region.

5. A successful and democratic Iraq is the best solution to the problems of the Middle East. Why would we abandon this vital country to our enemies?

6. The cost of pulling out before the Iraqi military and police forces are adequately trained would be the mass slaughter of innocent Iraqis.

7. If America does not win in Iraq, the war will be fought on U.S. soil.

8. We have the tools to win in Iraq; the U.S. has won 19 of the 20 guerrilla wars it has fought, and we just helped solve a sectarian conflict in Bosnia.

9. We have the right man in charge in Iraq. Gen. Petraeus is committed to defeating the insurgents, to empowering the Iraqi government and army, and to getting us out as quickly as possible without leaving the country to our enemies.
