40 Days and Nights of God’s Grace in North Dakota     2/1/2008
By Colleen Samson

Every community should conduct a 40 Days for Life campaign.

Here in North Dakota, when we first saw the 40 Days for Life Campaign ad in the National Catholic Register, it resounded in our hearts. Wow! We would be united with over 80 cities in 33 states in prayerful vigil, fasting and community outreach to stop abortion in our land! What power to break spiritual strongholds! What power to address the reality of abortion in our midst! We wanted this program in our state and were willing to do whatever necessary to see it through.

An eight-person campaign committee strategized to meet our needs along the way. We established a website for quick and visual communication and vigil scheduling. We visited with our youth in churches, colleges, and various organizations and saw them catch the fire for God and the desperate desire to end abortion in our state. Media outlets began to open up to us. Statewide presentations brought in other organizations from throughout the state. Finances were supplied according to our needs. Over 40,000 flyers were blanketed to area homes with volunteer planning and youth power.

We filled 40 days and 40 nights with nonstop, prayerful vigil and saw God’s grace and power through it all. Two children were confirmed saved, which also means that two families were protected from the aftermath of abortion. There were two separate weeks when no surgical abortions took place at the focus of our vigil, the only abortion site left in North Dakota. Our hearts were rekindled with the belief that North Dakota really could be the first abortion-free state in the nation as proclaimed to us 25 years ago.

After seeing the many fruitful blessings of our campaign, we made the decision to continue the fight. Following the 40 Days for Life campaign, we added an additional 10 days in which another precious child’s life was saved from abortion — and we will not stop! The ongoing 40 hours per week of prayerful vigil and fasting continues in Fargo.

We believe every community should conduct a 40 Days for Life campaign because it inflames the hearts, minds and souls of the people for Christ and for life. It a powerful tool for unity in our nation and a vehicle to proclaim the truth about the sanctity of human life throughout the land. We encourage other states to become involved in our challenge. Get together in your local Prayer Action Chapters, pray for the cause and work to begin a campaign in your state.

If you are interested in joining our fight, please visit www.40daysforlifend.com . A telephone alert system is in place to request prayer and support on designated killing days. The lives of the 1,298 babies dead from abortion in 2006 in North Dakota will not be forgotten. The vacant classrooms and empty desks are daily reminders that we must persevere. Come snow, wind or -30 degree temperatures, we will not quit praying and participating in peaceful activism until we see the destruction of our women and babies ended in our state. Please sign up today!
