Crouse Criticizes Newsweek for Distorting Christianity 12/9/2008 Washington, D.C. — Newsweek’s cover story this week is titled, “The Religious Case for Gay Marriage.” The author, Lisa Miller, argues that religious objections to same-sex “marriage” are a matter of custom and tradition rather than being Biblically based. Further, she argues that the Bible is out of date and irrelevant to contemporary situations. The magazine’s introduction, by editor Jon Meacham, seems to be written in an “I dare you” tone inviting a backlash of e-mails and letters from orthodox Christians who, he sneeringly writes, want to accuse the magazine of imposing their “agenda” on a “God-fearing nation.”
Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “The Newsweek article is breathtaking in the audacious ways that it distorts and misinterprets the Bible and traditional Christianity. It is astounding that a news magazine would publish an article on theology that is so far off base in its theological credibility.”
Crouse called the Newsweek article a “caricature” of basic Christian beliefs about marriage and family. She said, “It would be a major undertaking to identify all the ways in which the article is Biblically inaccurate or theologically distorted. From beginning to end the article is an embarrassment for Newsweek and unworthy of any national publication of merit. We could begin with the fact that the Bible is quite clear about the relationship that constitutes marriage — the New Testament even compares the relationship between a husband and wife to the relationship between Christ and His Church.”
“Beyond the Scriptural distortion,” Crouse added, “the article distorts the pro-marriage and pro-family movement that is solidly grounded on sociological research about family structures that contribute to the well-being of women and children. Regardless of the ideological bent of the researcher — whether coming from the left or the right side of the political spectrum — experts agree that the married couple, husband-and-wife family is the very best structure for children — not just ‘good for kids,’ but the very best home environment for kids’ well-being and future prospects.”
