Bush Proclaims National Sanctity of Human Life Day 1/16/2003 A day to commemorate life and the dignity of every human being By Sara E. Weltz A day to commemorate life and the dignity of every human being The White House released a Proclamation by President George W. Bush on Tuesday, January 14, announcing this coming Sunday, January 19, 2003, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day.
The Proclamation reads that January 19, 2003 is meant to commemorate the work that is being done “through ethical policies and the compassion of Americans.” The President stresses that it is through citizens helping citizens that we recognize “the dignity of every human being and the possibilities of every life.”
President Bush writes, “As we reflect upon the sanctity of human life, I call upon all Americans to recognize this day with appropriate ceremonies in our homes and places of worship, to rededicate ourselves to compassionate service, and to reaffirm our commitment to respecting the life and dignity of every human being.”
The Proclamation is well timed as we approach the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the January 22, 1973, court case that opened the floodgate to abortion on demand in the United States. Pro-lifers rally during this time of year to remember lives lost and to lobby for a change in U.S. abortion policies
Here are some ideas on how you can commit to commemorate National Sanctity of Human Life Day:
- Join Concerned Women for America (CWA) in the March for Life demonstration on Wednesday, January 22, 2003.
- Offer your professional services (plumbing, child care, writing, etc.) to a resource pregnancy center.
- Commit to praying for local pro-life groups on a daily basis.
- Give money to a pro-life organization.
- Write letters to your elected officials or letters to the editor.
- Volunteer time at a resource pregnancy center.
- Gather prayer and active support to help mothers considering abortion by sidewalk counseling.
- Commit a portion of your church service to educating people on the pro-life issue and praying for God to intervene.
In addition, let us be thankful for a President who honors God’s Word and Will by acknowledging and working for the sacredness of human life.
“On National Sanctity of Human Life Day, we reaffirm the value of human life and renew our dedication to ensuring that every American has access to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” writes Bush.
However, it is important to keep in mind that, without access to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are impossible. Let us indeed commemorate National Sanctity of Human Life Day and continue to battle for, as Bush identifies them, “those without the voice or power to defend their own rights.”
