Public Support for Marriage Holds Despite Senate Cloture Failure 7/14/2004 Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) told its 500,000 grassroots members that a change in tactics will bring about pro-marriage wins.
“The American people can be encouraged that this is just the beginning," said Robert Knight, director of CWA’s Culture and Family Institute. “We’re disappointed to see the Senate deliver homosexual activists a number to hang their hats on, but we’re confident that state referenda across the country and upcoming House votes will clearly show that public support for marriage is on the rise.”
“CWA has advocated a strategy that we’re proud to see the House has taken up; you don’t vote until you’re ready to win,” said Michael Schwartz, vice president for government relations. “The votes on D.C. Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the Marriage Protection Act in the House are going to be far better indicators of where we are on this issue than any vote in the partisan Senate in an election year.”
“We’re looking ahead to two strategies,” said Knight. “First, November is coming and it’s time to remind the people that they have a say in protecting marriage at the ballot box. Marriage is the heart and soul of what people want for their kids. When politicians violate the deeply held beliefs of their constituents, then they had better watch their backs at election time.
“We’re also going to work with leaders in Washington to create an amendment that will really energize the American people. No one wants the middle of this road. Codifying a definition of marriage while sending counterfeits like civil unions to the states isn’t a solution that pleases anyone, so who’s going to vote or work for it? It’s time to listen to the folks on Main Street USA and support an amendment that will protect the institution of marriage in essence as well as in name.”
