The Real War on Women: Iraq Introduces Law Legalizing Spousal Rape and Child Brides as American Feminists try to “Ban Bossy”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Concerned Women for America (CWA), the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, stands with the women of Iraq in protesting a piece of legislation that lowers the age for girls to marry, makes a father sole guardian of his children at age two, and legalizes spousal rape. Under the measure, referred to as Jaafari’s Law, a husband can have sex with his wife “without her consent,” women will not be able to leave the house without the husband’s permission, a woman’s rights to custody after divorce are affected, and it’s easier for men to take more than one wife. The bill also makes the father the only parent with the right to accept or refuse a marriage proposal. Statistics show that 25 percent of marriages in Iraq involved someone under 18 in 2011, up from 21 percent in 2001 and 15 percent in 1997.

Penny Nance, CEO and President of CWA, issued the following statement:

“Concerned Women for America believes that women are endowed with inalienable rights from our Creator. We call on women from all political stripes to join with us in condemning Iraq’s treatment of women. American women are blessed to be born into an exceptional nation that recognizes our God-given rights, and we are grateful. We pray for women across the globe who long for freedom. The women in Iraq deserve better.

“Iraqi law sets the legal age for marriage at 18 without ‘parental approval.’ Fifteen-year-old girls can be married off at a guardian’s behest. And if parliament ratifies this bill into law, girls as young as nine will be considered of age to marry. We know the psychological and physical harm these girls endure. It is time for the world to speak up and end this crime against women. This is the real war on women, and the Left would be wise to wake up to it.”

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Executive Director and Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, author of Children at Risk and Child Brides and Too-Early Sexual Activity, responded:

“Such rulings highlight how incredibly out of touch with reality those women are who want free contraception and talk about banning words like ‘bossy.’ Women around the world are dealing with basic human rights issues and the lack of fundamental necessities like good sanitation and pure water, while elite American women are fretting about supposed ‘wars’ on women.”
