Michelle Smith: Motivating Leadership in East Texas

Michelle Smith: Motivating Leadership in East Texas

Thomas Jefferson penned, “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God?” For Michelle Smith, Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) newest Area Director of East Texas, Jefferson’s words provide a clear-cut motto to live by – either defend our country’s Godly principles and religious liberties or lose them forever.

Motivated by Jefferson and eight years of experience as a counselor for a Crisis Pregnancy Center, Michelle longed to speak out against the immorality of abortion. She knew that women were not being fully informed about the emotional and physical consequences of abortion. Michelle knew she had to spread the word. Yet, she didn’t think her already extensive “to-do” list could fit policy activism.

Then a spontaneous decision to work on a conservative campaign brought Michelle directly into contact with CWA of Texas State Director Ann Hettinger. Over a lunch date, Ann took the opportunity to explain CWA’s efforts to educate and advocate Biblical values in public policy. Michelle realized this was an opportunity to advocate on behalf of her Christian values.

Shortly after her luncheon with Ann in February of 2010, Michelle joined CWA as a Prayer/Action Chapter leader. During Michelle’s first Prayer/Action meeting, 17 ladies gathered in her living room to humbly seek God’s wisdom and develop strategies for pro-life activism. Michelle confessed that she was relieved to discover many women share her values and concerns and are unafraid to make their voices heard.

Since joining forces with CWA of Texas, Michelle has stepped into the role of Area Director of East Texas. Her combined efforts with Ann and many other CWA leaders have led to incredible accomplishments in their state. These CWA ladies have facilitated the implementation of the Sonogram Bill, which requires a woman receive an ultrasound 24 hours prior to an abortion, and three new anti-sex trafficking bills. Moreover, Michelle routinely meets with state legislators to discuss the important social issues at hand. No doubt, Michelle’s cheerful personality, confident demeanor and expertise makes a lasting impression on her representatives. In fact, Ann Hettinger exclaimed, “CWA of Texas is fortunate to have such a vibrant, well-connected leader for our organization.”

Michelle’s biggest prayer is for God to mold strong Christian leadership throughout East Texas that will motivate the entire nation. No longer can Godly men and women be passive about issues such as, abortion, same-sex “marriage” and pornography. By getting involved in a CWA Prayer/Action chapter, local school boards, or simply inviting a neighbor to church, women can make a huge difference in society. Michelle explains, “We are the salt and light of the earth. It is our job to tell people what is really happening in our country. I firmly believe that for the sake of my children and grandchildren, Christian women and men need to continue to stand up and speak out on behalf of God’s truths.” She continues, “Any woman can do it. It’s just a matter of believing what God has for you and putting one foot in front of the other.”
