A new study by the Pew Research Center on American motherhood shows a record 41 percent birth rate to single mothers in 2008. An increase from 1990′s rate of 28 percent. While the increase in births to single mothers is found across the board, black women are leading the trend with 72 percent of out-of-wedlock birth rate compared to 53 percent for children born to Hispanic women and 29 percent to white women. Rev. Jesse Peterson, founder and president of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, says this rate is alarming and is calling pastors to address its root cause, moral poverty. Noting the social destruction of the family, BOND will host its First Annual Men’s Conference on Fatherhood on June 19 in Los Angeles, California.
